Reducing the usage of plastic bags has been a pressing task for governments around the world. In China, the government also makes extensive efforts to contrast the negative effects of plastic bag usage by issuing different laws and policies. Conducting an on-site counting of bags used by consumers, this study investigates the usage of plastic bags in China and evaluates the effectiveness of these policies within both supermarkets and vegetable markets (popular markets primarily for vegetables in China). Besides, 5 different factors are investigated to learn their potential influence on the usage of plastic bags, including generation, gender, the price for plastic carrier bags, the packaging style of products, and market type. Results show a boomerang effect of the pricing policy (i.e., charging for plastic carrier bags) in China. Specifically, the policy decreases the usage of plastic carrier bags by 44%. However, the total usage of plastic bags increases, rather than decreases due to the excessive usage of free inner plastic packaging bags used as alternatives to plastic carrier bags. Old and middle-young consumers are.

China, with its huge population, is among the topping countries worldwide on plastic bag usage. Supermarkets and vegetable markets are the two most popular shopping places for the Chinese people. A vegetable market is located around people's living areas and a collection of individual vendors selling primarily food products, such as fresh meat and vegetables. Supermarkets are places where people do their grocery shopping and are often located within business centers that are farther from people's living areas than vegetable markets. Supermarkets with a medium or large size may also provide food products. Specifically, large supermarkets refer to those with an area larger than 1000 square meters in China, such as a typical Walmart; while medium-sized supermarkets are smaller ones with an area of at least 500 square meters, such as a typical ALDI. Vegetable markets usually open from 6:00 to 20:00 and supermarkets from 10:00 to 22:00. Generally, Chinese people do food shopping every day and particularly in the early morning around 7:00 am. Fig. 1 shows a shopping cart and different kinds of bags widely used in China. As shopping carts could be used as alternatives to plastic carrier bags, they are classified together with cloth reusable bags into reusable bags for analysis.

Plastic usage is increasing the number of pollutants in the environment. Plastic particles and other plastic-based pollutants are found in our environment and food chain, posing a threat to human health. From this perspective, the biodegradable plastics material focuses on creating a more sustainable and greener world with a smaller environmental imprint. This assessment should consider the entire life cycle assessment of the objectives and priorities for producing a wide range of biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics can also have properties similar to traditional plastics while also delivering additional benefits due to their minimised impact on the environment in terms of carbon dioxide, as long as appropriate waste management includes such as composting, are contained. The demand for cost-effective, eco-friendly materials increases to reduce waste management and pollution issues. This study seeks to comprehensively understand biodegradable plastics production and applications research, product prospects, sustainability, sourcing and ecological imprint. Academic and industry interest in biodegradable plastics for sustainability has exploded in recent years. Researchers used the triple bottom line to analyse the sustainability of biodegradable plastics (economic profit, social responsibility, and environmental protection). The research also discusses the variables that influence the adoption of biodegradable plastics and a sustainable framework for improving biodegradable plastics' long-term viability. This study provides a thorough yet simple theoretical design of biodegradable plastics. The research findings and future research endeavours provide a new avenue for further research and contribution to the area
